Kite Summary

Kite is a small town located in the state of Georgia, United States. It is situated in the southeastern part of the state, in the county of Laurens. The town is located on the banks of the Oconee River, and is part of the Dublin-Laurens Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Kite was 545.

Geography

Kite is located at 32°45'25" North, 82°45'45" West (32.7569, -82.7625). It is situated at an elevation of 441 feet (134 m) above sea level. The town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of which is land.

History

Kite was founded in 1883 by the Reverend John Kite, a Methodist minister. The town was named after him, and was incorporated in 1887. The town was originally a farming community, and the main crops grown were cotton, corn, and peanuts.

Economy

Kite’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including cotton, corn, peanuts, and soybeans. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 206 households, and 145 families residing in Kite. The population density was 776.4 people per square mile (300.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.3% White, 17.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 206 households, out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% were married couples living together, 15.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.17.
In Kite, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
