Eatonton Summary

History

Eatonton, Georgia is a small city located in Putnam County, Georgia. It is the county seat of Putnam County and is located about 70 miles southeast of Atlanta. The city was founded in 1807 and was named after William Eaton, a Revolutionary War hero. The city was originally known as Eatonton Depot, but the name was changed to Eatonton in 1809.
The city was an important trading center during the antebellum period and was home to several prominent families. During the Civil War, Eatonton was the site of several battles, including the Battle of Eatonton in 1864.
