Chester Summary

Chester, Georgia is a small city located in Randolph County in the west-central part of the state. It is situated on the banks of the Chattahoochee River, about 30 miles south of Columbus. The city has a population of approximately 1,500 people and is part of the Columbus, Georgia metropolitan area.

History

Chester was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from South Carolina. The town was named after the nearby Chester Plantation, which was owned by the prominent local family of the same name. The town was incorporated in 1845 and quickly became a center of commerce and industry. The railroad arrived in 1851, connecting Chester to the rest of the state and the nation.
The Civil War had a major impact on Chester. The town was occupied by Union forces in 1864 and was the site of several skirmishes. After the war, the town slowly recovered and began to rebuild. The economy was largely based on agriculture, with cotton and corn being the main crops.
In the early 20th century, Chester began to experience a period of growth and prosperity. The town was home to several factories, including a cotton mill, a sawmill, and a furniture factory. The town also had a thriving business district, with several stores and restaurants.
