Woodmere Summary

Woodmere is a village located in Nassau County, New York, United States. It is part of the Five Towns, which is a group of villages and hamlets in Nassau County on the South Shore of Long Island. The population of Woodmere was 8,919 at the 2010 census.

History

Woodmere was originally part of the Town of Hempstead, and was known as “Hempstead Harbor” until 1894 when it was incorporated as the Village of Woodmere. The name “Woodmere” was chosen to honor the many trees that grew in the area.
The area was first settled by the Dutch in the 1600s, and the first recorded land purchase was in 1680. The area was mainly used for farming until the late 1800s, when it began to be developed as a summer resort. The first hotel was built in 1871, and the village was incorporated in 1894.

Geography

Woodmere is located at 40°37′17″N 73°41′17″W (40.6213, -73.6881). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Woodmere is a primarily residential community, with a few small businesses located in the village. The main industries in the area are retail, health care, and education. The village is home to several private schools, including the Woodmere Academy and the Yeshiva of South Shore.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 8,919 people, 3,072 households, and 2,521 families residing in the village. The population density was 4,068.2 people per square mile (1,569.2/km2). There were 3,232 housing units at an average density of 1,457.2 per square mile (563.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 79.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 8.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.3% of the population.
There were 3,072 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.7% were non-families. 17.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.30.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $100,945, and the median income for a family was $118,945. Males had a median income of $76,945 versus $50,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $45,945. About 2.2% of families and 3.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
