History

The area that is now Sand Lake was first settled in 1771 by a group of Dutch settlers. The town was formed in 1812 from the town of Berlin. The town was originally known as West Berlin, but the name was changed to Sand Lake in 1820.
The town was an agricultural community for many years, with dairy farming being the main industry. In the late 19th century, the town began to develop as a resort area, with several hotels and boarding houses being built.

Geography

Sand Lake is located in the eastern part of Rensselaer County, in the eastern part of the state of New York. It is bordered by the towns of Berlin to the north, Poestenkill to the east, East Greenbush to the south, and Stephentown to the west.
The town is located in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains, and is home to several small lakes, including Sand Lake, which is the largest. The town is also home to several small streams, including the Poestenkill Creek, which flows through the town.
The town has a total area of 33.2 square miles, of which 32.9 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles is water.

The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.09.
