Waverly Summary
Waverly is a village located in Tioga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,854 at the 2010 census. The village is named after Sir Walter Scott's novel Waverley. It is part of the Binghamton Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
The area that is now Waverly was first settled in 1786 by John and Mary Smith. The village was incorporated in 1854. The village was originally known as "Factoryville" due to the numerous factories that were built in the area. The name was changed to Waverly in 1858.
Geography
Waverly is located at 42°3′25″N 76°31′17″W (42.056944, -76.521389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
The village is located on the Chemung River, which is a tributary of the Susquehanna River. The village is located in the Southern Tier region of New York.
Economy
The economy of Waverly is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The village is home to several factories, including a paper mill, a plastics factory, and a metal fabrication plant. The village also has several retail stores, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a clothing store.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,854 people, 745 households, and 463 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,543.3 people per square mile (595.3/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 681.7 per square mile (263.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
