Waterloo Summary

Waterloo is a village located in Seneca County, New York, United States. The population was 5,666 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Finger Lakes region.

History

The area that is now Waterloo was first settled in 1790 by a group of Quakers from Pennsylvania. The village was incorporated in 1829 and was named after the Battle of Waterloo in Belgium.
In the early 19th century, the village was a major center for the production of salt. The salt industry was so important to the local economy that the village was known as “Salt City”. The salt industry declined in the late 19th century and the village’s economy shifted to agriculture and manufacturing.

Geography

Waterloo is located at 42°54′N 76°50′W (42.9000, -76.8333). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.7 square miles (4.4 km2), all of it land.
The village is located on the north side of Seneca Lake, the largest of the Finger Lakes. It is also located on the Seneca River, which flows into the lake.

Economy

The economy of Waterloo is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several large farms, including the Seneca Farms Dairy, which produces milk and other dairy products.
The village is also home to several manufacturing companies, including the Seneca Foods Corporation, which produces canned and frozen fruits and vegetables.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 5,666 people, 2,093 households, and 1,364 families residing in the village. The population density was 3,323.3 people per square mile (1,279.2/km2). There were 2,309 housing units at an average density of 1,360.3 per square mile (525.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $32,917 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,917. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
