Valley Stream Summary

Valley Stream is a village located in Nassau County, New York, United States. It is situated in the southwestern part of the county, and is part of the town of Hempstead. The population was 37,511 at the 2010 census.

History

Valley Stream was originally inhabited by the Rockaway Indians, a branch of the Lenape tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1643, and the village was officially incorporated in 1925. The village was named after the stream that runs through it, which was originally called “Valley Stream” by the Dutch settlers.

Geography

Valley Stream is located at 40°39′N 73°41′W (40.65, -73.68). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.6 square miles (9.3 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Valley Stream is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The village is also home to a number of corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the National Hockey League’s New York Islanders.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 37,511 people, 12,817 households, and 9,717 families residing in the village. The population density was 10,400.7 people per square mile (4,019.2/km2). There were 13,541 housing units at an average density of 3,743.3 per square mile (1,447.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 57.2% White, 28.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 5.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.3% from other races, and 3.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.2% of the population.
There were 12,817 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.41.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $62,945, and the median income for a family was $71,945. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $36,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $25,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.7% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
