Sherburne is a small town located in Chenango County, New York. It is situated in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains, about 25 miles south of Binghamton. The town was first settled in 1792 and was incorporated in 1808. The population of Sherburne was 2,717 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Sherburne is located at 42°45'N 75°37'W (42.75, -75.62). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 28.2 square miles, of which 28.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles (0.36%) is water.
The town is bordered by the towns of Norwich to the north, Smyrna to the east, and Columbus to the south. The Unadilla River flows through the town.
History
The area that is now Sherburne was first settled in 1792 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The town was originally known as "Sherburne Flats" and was part of the town of Norwich. In 1808, the town was officially incorporated as the Town of Sherburne.
The town was named after General William Sherburne, a Revolutionary War hero who fought in the Battle of Saratoga.
Economy
The economy of Sherburne is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several dairy farms, as well as a number of apple orchards. The town also has a number of small businesses, including a hardware store, a grocery store, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 2,717 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the town. The population density was 96.3 people per square mile (37.2/km2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 42.0 per square mile (16.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $41,964, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $25,000 for females.
