Seaford Summary
Seaford is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 15,827 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Seaford was originally inhabited by the Meroke Indians. The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1643. The area was known as Jerusalem until 1837, when it was renamed Seaford after the town of Seaford in England.
In the late 19th century, Seaford was a popular summer resort for wealthy New Yorkers. The area was known for its beaches, fishing, and hunting.
Geography
Seaford is located at 40°39'25" North, 73°32'45" West (40.656944, -73.545833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (2.45%) is water.
Economy
Seaford is a primarily residential community, with a few small businesses. The largest employers in the area are the Seaford School District and the Seaford Public Library.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 15,827 people, 5,717 households, and 4,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,845.3 per square mile (1,484.2/km2). There were 5,845 housing units at an average density of 1,427.3/sq mi (551.3/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.1% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 5,717 households, out of which 33.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.3% were non-families. 19.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.19.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $76,845, and the median income for a family was $86,945. Males had a median income of $51,945 versus $37,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $30,945. About 1.7% of families and 2.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.3% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
