Salamanca Summary

History

The area that is now Salamanca was originally part of the Allegany Indian Reservation, home of the Seneca Nation of Indians. The Seneca Nation of Indians had been living in the area since the late 1600s. The first white settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s. The first permanent settlement was established in 1818 and was known as "New City". The settlement was renamed "Salamanca" in 1848 after the Spanish city of Salamanca.
The city was incorporated in 1891 and was named after the Spanish city of Salamanca. The city was a major railroad hub in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city was also home to several large industries, including a tannery, a paper mill, and a furniture factory.

Geography

Salamanca is located at 42°7′17″N 78°44′25″W (42.1214, -78.7399). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
The city is located in the south-central part of Cattaraugus County. It is surrounded by the Town of Salamanca. The city is located near the Allegheny River and is part of the Allegany Indian Reservation.

The Seneca Nation of Indians operates several businesses in the city, including a casino, a hotel, and a retail store. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a paper mill and a furniture factory.

As of the census of 2010, there were 5,815 people, 2,521 households, and 1,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,637.2 people per square mile (1,017.2/km2). There were 2,845 housing units at an average density of 1,288.2 per square mile (496.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 2,521 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.

The per capita income for the city was $17,845.
