Parishville Summary

Parishville is a town located in St. Lawrence County, New York, United States. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. The town is named after the Parish family, who were early settlers.

Geography

Parishville is located in the northern part of St. Lawrence County, in the Adirondack Park. It is bordered by Hopkinton to the north, Colton to the east, Pierrepont to the south, and Hopkinton and Clare to the west.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 57.2 square miles (148.2 km2), of which 56.9 square miles (147.3 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.9 km2), or 0.50%, is water.

The Oswegatchie River flows through the town

History

The area that is now Parishville was first settled around 1802 by the Parish family. The town of Parishville was formed in 1808 from part of the town of Hopkinton.
In 1812, the town was divided into two parts, with the northern part becoming the town of Hopkinton and the southern part remaining as Parishville.
In 1817, the town was further divided, with the western part becoming the town of Clare and the eastern part remaining as Parishville.

Economy

The economy of Parishville is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several farms, including dairy farms, beef farms, and vegetable farms.
The town is also home to several tourist attractions, including the Parishville-Hopkinton State Park, the Parishville Historical Society Museum, and the Parishville-Hopkinton Fair.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,717 people, 690 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 30.2 people per square mile (11.7/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 14.8 per square mile (5.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.45% White, 0.35% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.12% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.35% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.7% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.94.
