Orient Summary

Orient is a hamlet located in the Town of Southold in Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is located on the North Fork of Long Island and is part of the larger East End region. The hamlet is situated on the eastern end of the North Fork, and is bordered by the Long Island Sound to the north, the Peconic Bay to the south, and the Orient State Park to the east. As of the 2010 census, the population of Orient was 1,115.

History

The area now known as Orient was originally inhabited by the Algonquian-speaking Manhanset Indians. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the 1640s, and the hamlet was officially established in 1661. The hamlet was originally known as Oysterponds, and was renamed Orient in 1836. The name is derived from the Orient Point Lighthouse, which was built in 1838.

Geography

Orient is located at the eastern end of the North Fork of Long Island, and is bordered by the Long Island Sound to the north, the Peconic Bay to the south, and the Orient State Park to the east. The hamlet is situated on a peninsula, and is surrounded by water on three sides. The hamlet is located approximately 70 miles east of New York City.

Climate

Orient has a humid subtropical climate, with warm summers and cool winters. The average annual temperature is 54°F, and the average annual precipitation is 44 inches.

Economy

The economy of Orient is largely based on tourism and agriculture. The hamlet is home to several wineries, and is a popular destination for fishing, boating, and other outdoor activities. The hamlet is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and galleries.
