History
The village of New York Mills was incorporated in 1832. The village was named after the mills that were built in the area in the early 19th century. The mills were built to take advantage of the water power of the Sauquoit Creek. The first mill was built in 1810 by John and William Smith. The village grew rapidly in the 19th century, and by the mid-1800s it was a thriving industrial center.
The village was home to several factories, including a paper mill, a woolen mill, a cotton mill, a grist mill, and a saw mill. The village also had a number of stores, churches, and other businesses. The village was also home to a number of schools, including the New York Mills Academy, which was founded in 1845.

New York Mills is located at (43.097, -75.25). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
The village is located on the Sauquoit Creek, which flows through the village. The creek is a tributary of the Mohawk River.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,936 people, 1,213 households, and 790 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,427.2 people per square mile (937.2/km2). There were 1,279 housing units at an average density of 1,053.2 per square mile (406.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.45% White, 0.48% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.48% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.17% of the population.
There were 1,213 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
