History

The area that is now Montrose was originally inhabited by the Wappinger Indians. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century. The hamlet was originally known as “Cortlandt’s Landing” and was part of the town of Cortlandt. In 1845, the hamlet was renamed “Montrose” after the Battle of Montrose in Scotland.
In the late 19th century, Montrose became a popular summer resort for wealthy New Yorkers. The hamlet was home to several grand hotels, including the Montrose Hotel, the Montrose House, and the Montrose Inn. The Montrose Inn was destroyed by fire in 1895.
In the early 20th century, Montrose became a popular destination for artists and writers. The hamlet was home to several art colonies, including the Montrose Art Colony, the Montrose Art Association, and the Montrose Art School.
