Manchester is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York. It is situated on the east side of Canandaigua Lake, the fourth largest of the Finger Lakes. The town is bordered by the towns of Canandaigua to the north, Farmington to the east, Victor to the south, and Phelps to the west.
The town is located at the intersection of New York State Route 96 and New York State Route 21. The New York State Thruway (Interstate 90) passes through the town, with access from Exit 44 (Manchester).

History

The area that is now Manchester was first settled around 1789. The town of Manchester was formed in 1821 from part of the town of Farmington. The town was named after Manchester, England.
In 1823, the first courthouse and jail were built in Manchester. The town was also the site of the first county fair in Ontario County, held in 1825.
The Manchester and Canandaigua Railroad was built in 1844, connecting Manchester to Canandaigua. The railroad was later extended to Rochester in 1853.
The town of Manchester was the site of the first Ontario County Fair in 1825. The fair was held annually until 1845, when it was moved to Canandaigua.

Economy

The economy of Manchester is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several wineries, including the Finger Lakes Wine Center and the Manchester Hill Winery.
The town is also home to several manufacturing companies, including the Manchester Tool Company and the Manchester Machine Company.

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,961 people, 3,717 households, and 2,521 families residing in the town. The population density was 517.3 people per square mile (199.7/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 224.3 per square mile (86.6/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $54,917. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the town was $22,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
