History

The area around Hornell was first settled in 1790 by Zebulon Hornell, a Quaker from Pennsylvania. The area was known as "Hornell's Flats" and was part of the town of Dansville. In 1852, the village of Hornellsville was incorporated. In 1856, the village changed its name to Hornell. In 1868, Hornell was incorporated as a city.

Geography

Hornell is located at 42°20'N 77°41'W (42.33, -77.68). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Hornell is the home of St. James Mercy Hospital, the largest employer in the city. Other major employers include Alstom, a French-owned manufacturer of power generation equipment, and Dresser-Rand, a manufacturer of industrial turbines. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,563 people, 3,521 households, and 2,093 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,037.2 people per square mile (788.2/km2). There were 3,902 housing units at an average density of 930.2 per square mile (359.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 2.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 3,521 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.2% were married couples living together, 15.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.2 males.
