Hewlett, New York is a hamlet located in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County, New York. It is located on the South Shore of Long Island, approximately 25 miles east of Manhattan. The hamlet is bordered by the hamlets of Woodmere to the east, Valley Stream to the south, and Lynbrook to the west. The population of Hewlett was 6,819 as of the 2010 census.

History

Hewlett was originally inhabited by the Rockaway Indians, a sub-tribe of the Lenape Indians. The area was first settled by Europeans in 1643, when Thomas Hewlett, an Englishman, purchased land from the Rockaway Indians. The area was known as Hewlett Neck until the mid-1800s, when it was renamed Hewlett.
In the late 1800s, Hewlett was a farming community, with many of the residents working in the nearby towns of Woodmere and Lynbrook. In the early 1900s, the area began to develop into a suburban community, with many of the residents commuting to New York City for work.

Hewlett is located at 40°38'25" North, 73°41'17" West (40.6403, -73.6881). According to the United States Census Bureau, the hamlet has a total area of 1.3 square miles, all of it land.
