Geography
Hancock is located in the southwest corner of Delaware County, bordered to the west by Otsego County, to the south by Schoharie County, and to the east by the towns of Colchester and Walton. The town of Hancock is located in the Catskill Mountains and is home to the highest peak in the county, Slide Mountain, which rises to an elevation of 4,180 feet (1,273 m). The town is drained by the East Branch of the Delaware River, which flows through the town from north to south.

History
The town of Hancock was first settled around 1790 by settlers from Connecticut. The town was formed in 1808 from the town of Colchester. The town was named after John Hancock, the first signer of the Declaration of Independence.
The town of Hancock was an important center of the lumber industry in the 19th century. The town was also home to several tanneries and gristmills.

The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
