Geography

Hamlin is located in the northwest corner of Monroe County, bordered by Lake Ontario to the north, the town of Parma to the east, the town of Clarkson to the south, and the town of Ogden to the west. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 33.2sqmi, of which 32.9sqmi is land and 0.3sqmi, or 0.86%, is water.

History

The area that is now Hamlin was first settled around 1810. The town of Hamlin was formed in 1812 from part of the town of Clarkson. The town was named after Daniel Hamlin, a prominent lawyer and statesman from the area.
In 1821, the town of Hamlin was divided into two parts, with the northern part becoming the town of Parma. In 1852, the town of Hamlin was further divided, with the western part becoming the town of Ogden.

Economy

The economy of Hamlin is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several farms, including dairy farms, vegetable farms, and fruit farms. The town is also home to several wineries and breweries, as well as a number of restaurants and other tourist attractions.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,719 people, 3,093 households, and 2,323 families residing in the town. The population density was 263.7 people per square mile (101.9/km2). There were 3,309 housing units at an average density of 100.3 per square mile (38.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 33.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
