History

The area that is now Hamburg was first settled in 1805 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. The town was originally known as "Brant Town" after the town's first supervisor, William Brant. The town was renamed "Hamburg" in 1812, after the German city of Hamburg.
The town of Hamburg was officially established in 1812, and the first town meeting was held in 1813. The town grew rapidly in the 19th century, and by the early 20th century, it had become a popular summer resort destination.

Geography

Hamburg is located in the south-central part of Erie County, and is bordered by the towns of Orchard Park to the north, Eden to the east, Boston to the south, and Aurora to the west. The town is located on the eastern shore of Lake Erie, and is approximately 20 miles south of Buffalo.
The town has a total area of 37.2 square miles, of which 36.7 square miles is land and 0.5 square miles is water. The town is home to several small lakes, including Lake Erie, Lakeview, and Silver Lake.
