Gowanda Summary

Gowanda is a village located in the town of Collins in Cattaraugus County, New York, United States. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. The village is located in the southwest corner of the town of Collins, and is the largest village in the county.

History

Gowanda was first settled in 1810 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The village was originally known as "New Connecticut," but was later renamed after a Seneca Indian chief named Gowanda. The village was incorporated in 1848.
Gowanda was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, and was home to several prominent abolitionists, including the Rev. John Rankin and the Rev. John Brown. The village was also the site of a major battle during the War of 1812.

Geography

Gowanda is located at 42°25'25" North, 78°59'45" West (42.423, -78.996). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 672.2 per square mile (260.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.9% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
