Gainesville Summary

Gainesville is a town located in Wyoming County, New York, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. The town is named after General Edmund P. Gaines, a hero of the War of 1812.

Geography

Gainesville is located in the northwest corner of Wyoming County, bordered by Genesee County to the north, Livingston County to the east, and Cattaraugus County to the west. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.2sqmi, of which 36.1sqmi is land and 0.1sqmi, or 0.22%, is water.

The town is in the western part of the county and is northwest of Warsaw the county seat

History

The area was first settled around 1810. The town of Gainesville was formed in 1812 from the town of Perry.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 690 households, and 517 families residing in the town. The population density was 51.1 people per square mile (19.7/km^2). There were 790 housing units at an average density of 21.9 per square mile (8.5/km^2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.41% White, 0.11% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.05% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.7% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.2% were non-families. 21.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
