Farmingdale Summary

Farmingdale is a village located in Nassau County, New York, United States. It is located within the Town of Oyster Bay. As of the 2010 census, the village had a population of 8,189.

History

Farmingdale was first settled in 1695 by Thomas Powell, who purchased land from the Massapequa Indians. The area was known as "Farmingdale" by 1750, and the village was incorporated in 1904. The village was originally a farming community, and the name reflects this.

Geography

Farmingdale is located at 40°43'17" North, 73°27'17" West (40.7214, -73.4548). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.3 square miles, all of it land.

Economy

Farmingdale is home to several large companies, including Grumman Aerospace, Northrop Grumman, and Republic Aviation. The village is also home to Farmingdale State College, a public college of the State University of New York.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 8,189 people, 2,845 households, and 1,945 families residing in the village. The population density was 6,323.8 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the village was 79.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 5.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.3% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.30.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 21.2% under the age of 18, 16.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $68,958, and the median income for a family was $77,917. Males had a median income of $50,917 versus $37,917 for females. The per capita income for the village was $27,917. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
