Erin Summary

Erin is a town located in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 2,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Elmira Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Erin was first settled in 1791 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The town was originally part of the Town of Chemung, but was later split off and incorporated in 1822. The town was named after the Irish county of the same name.

Geography

Erin is located in the western part of Chemung County, bordered by the Town of Van Etten to the north, the Town of Chemung to the east, the Town of Southport to the south, and the Town of Catlin to the west. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 33.2 square miles, of which 33.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3%) is water.

Economy

Erin is a rural town with a primarily agricultural economy. The town is home to several small businesses, including a few restaurants, a gas station, and a few convenience stores. The town is also home to a few small manufacturing companies, including a furniture manufacturer and a plastics manufacturer.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,845 people, 1,093 households, and 790 families residing in the town. The population density was 85.9 people per square mile (33.2/km2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 35.6 per square mile (13.8/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
