Durhamville Summary

Durhamville is a small hamlet located in Oneida County, New York, United States. It is situated in the town of Verona, approximately 8 miles east of the city of Rome. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Durhamville was first settled in 1793 by a group of settlers from Durham, Connecticut. The hamlet was originally known as Durham, but the name was changed to Durhamville in 1808. The hamlet was incorporated in 1848.
Durhamville was an important stop on the Utica and Syracuse Railroad, which was built in 1839. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the hamlet, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people.

Geography

Durhamville is located at 43°14'25" North, 75°25'45" West (43.240278, -75.429167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the hamlet has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Durhamville is a small, rural community with a limited economy. The hamlet is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a gas station, and a few restaurants. The hamlet also has a post office and a library.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the hamlet. The population density was 1,541.4 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 671.4 per square mile (259.3/km2). The racial makeup of the hamlet was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the hamlet, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the hamlet was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the hamlet was $17,845.
