DeRuyter Summary

Deruyter, New York is a small village located in Madison County, New York. It is situated on the banks of the Chenango River, and is part of the larger town of DeRuyter. The village has a population of approximately 1,000 people, and is located about 20 miles south of Syracuse.

History

The area that is now DeRuyter was first settled in 1793 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. The village was originally known as “DeRuyter’s Corners”, and was named after the Dutch settler, Johannes DeRuyter. The village was incorporated in 1817, and the name was changed to DeRuyter.
In the early 19th century, DeRuyter was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several mills, including a grist mill, a saw mill, and a woolen mill. The village also had a tannery, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.
In the late 19th century, the village began to decline. The mills closed, and the population began to decline. The village was revitalized in the early 20th century, when the New York Central Railroad built a line through the village. This allowed the village to become a stop on the railroad, and the population began to grow again.

DeRuyter is located in Madison County, New York. It is situated on the banks of the Chenango River, and is part of the larger town of DeRuyter. The village has a total area of 0.7 square miles, all of which is land.
