Depew Summary

Depew, New York is a village located in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 15,303 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Depew was founded in 1856 by Chauncey Mitchell Depew, a prominent lawyer and later a United States Senator. The village was incorporated in 1894.

Geography

Depew is located at 42°51′N 78°44′W (42.845, -78.735). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Economy

Depew is home to several large employers, including the New York State Thruway Authority, the New York State Department of Transportation, and the New York State Office of Mental Health. The village is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 15,303 people, 6,717 households, and 4,072 families residing in the village. The population density was 3,637.2 people per square mile (1,406.2/km2). There were 7,093 housing units at an average density of 1,711.2 per square mile (660.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 1.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 6,717 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 20.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.
