Chateaugay is located in the northern part of Franklin County, bordered by the towns of Bellmont to the north, Malone to the east, and Burke to the south. History
The area that is now Chateaugay was first settled in the late 18th century by French-Canadian immigrants. The town was established in 1810 from part of the town of Malone. The town was named after the Chateauguay River, which was named by French explorers in the 17th century.
In the 19th century, the town was a major lumbering center, with several sawmills located along the Chateauguay River. The town was also home to several iron ore mines, which were in operation until the early 20th century.

Today, Chateaugay is a rural community with a largely agricultural economy. The town is home to several dairy farms, as well as several small businesses. The town is also home to a small ski resort, which is popular with local residents and tourists.

The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.3% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
