Central Islip Summary

Central Islip is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located in the Town of Islip in Suffolk County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population of Central Islip was 34,450.

History

The area now known as Central Islip was originally inhabited by the Secatogue Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1600s, and the hamlet was officially established in 1837. The hamlet was originally known as “Wheatley”, after the Wheatley family who were among the first settlers. The name was changed to “Central Islip” in 1873.
Central Islip was a rural farming community until the late 19th century, when it began to develop into a residential community. The hamlet was served by the Long Island Rail Road beginning in 1873, and the population began to grow rapidly. By the early 20th century, Central Islip had become a popular summer resort destination, with several large hotels and resorts.
In the 1950s, Central Islip began to develop into an industrial center, with several large factories and warehouses being built in the area. The hamlet also became home to several large psychiatric hospitals, including the Central Islip Psychiatric Center, which opened in 1954.

Geography

Central Islip is located at 40°47'17" North, 73°12'17" West (40.7881, -73.2047). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Central Islip is home to several large businesses and industries, including the Central Islip Industrial Park, which is home to several large warehouses and factories. The hamlet is also home to several large psychiatric hospitals, including the Central Islip Psychiatric Center.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 34,450 people, 10,845 households, and 7,845 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 6,619.3 people per square mile (2,556.2/km2). There were 11,717 housing units at an average density of 2,269.3 per square mile (876.7/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 44.2% White, 28.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 8.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 16.2% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 33.7% of the population.
There were 10,845 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 17.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.14 and the average family size was 3.63.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $56,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $20,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
