Cassadaga Summary

Cassadaga is a small village located in Chautauqua County, New York, United States. It is situated in the southwestern corner of the county, near the Pennsylvania border. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. The village is named after the Seneca Indian chief Cassadaga, who lived in the area in the late 1700s.

History

The area that is now Cassadaga was originally inhabited by the Seneca Indians. The Seneca were part of the Iroquois Confederacy, a powerful alliance of Native American tribes in the northeastern United States. The Seneca were forced to cede their lands to the United States in the Treaty of Big Tree in 1797.
In 1848, the first settlers arrived in the area. They were mostly Quakers from Pennsylvania and New England. The village was officially founded in 1851 and was named after the Seneca chief Cassadaga.
The village grew slowly over the next few decades, and by the turn of the century it had a population of about 500. The village was incorporated in 1906.

Geography

Cassadaga is located at 42°20'N 79°25'W (42.33, -79.41). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
The village is located in the southwestern corner of Chautauqua County, near the Pennsylvania border. It is about 25 miles (40 km) south of Buffalo and about 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Jamestown.

Economy

The economy of Cassadaga is largely based on tourism. The village is home to the Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp, which was founded in 1879 and is the oldest and largest spiritualist camp in the United States. The camp attracts thousands of visitors each year who come to take part in spiritualist activities such as seances and mediumship.
The village is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a few antique shops.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 233 households, and 140 families residing in the village. The population density was 776.4 people per square mile (300.2/km2). There were 259 housing units at an average density of 369.3 per square mile (142.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
There were 233 households, out of which 24.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% were non-families. 33.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845. About 8.3% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.7% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
