Campbell is a town located in Steuben County, New York, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Robert Campbell, an early settler.

Geography

Campbell is located in the western part of Steuben County, bordered by the towns of Avoca to the north, Hornellsville to the east, Wayland to the south, and Cohocton to the west. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.2sqmi, of which 36.1sqmi is land and 0.1sqmi, or 0.22%, is water.

History

The area that is now Campbell was first settled around 1790. The town of Campbell was formed in 1812 from the town of Avoca.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,919 people, 745 households, and 545 families residing in the town. The population density was 53.2 people per square mile (20.6/km^2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 23.3 per square mile (9.0/km^2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.44% White, 0.21% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.21% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.68% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
