The area that is now Burdett was first settled in the late 18th century. The village was originally known as "Hector Corners" and was part of the Town of Hector. In 1845, the village was renamed Burdett after the Burdett family, who were early settlers in the area.
The village was incorporated in 1892. In the late 19th century, Burdett was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several businesses, including a grist mill, a saw mill, a blacksmith shop, a cheese factory, and a cider mill.
