Big Flats Summary

History
Big Flats was first settled around 1790. The town was formed from the Town of Elmira in 1823. The town was named for a large flat area near the Chemung River.
Geography
Big Flats is located in the south-central part of Chemung County. It is bordered by the Town of Elmira to the north, the Town of Southport to the east, the Town of Horseheads to the south, and the Town of Catlin to the west.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 33.2 square miles, of which 33.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3%) is water.

Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,842 people, 1,945 households, and 1,346 families residing in the town. The population density was 146.7 people per square mile (56.7/km^2). There were 2,068 housing units at an average density of 62.4 per square mile (24.1/km^2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.90% White, 0.45% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.77% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.7% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.95.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $48,958. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the town was $19,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.

Big Flats is home to several businesses, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Lowe's Home Improvement store, and a Wegmans grocery store. The town is also home to several industrial parks, including the Big Flats Industrial Park and the Big Flats Commerce Park.
The town is also home to the Big Flats Airport, a public-use airport located two nautical miles (3.7 km) east of the central business district of Big Flats. The airport is used for general aviation and is owned by the Chemung County Industrial Development Agency.
Big Flats is also home to the Big Flats Historical Society, which is dedicated to preserving the history of the town. The society operates a museum and library, and hosts several events throughout the year.
