Bay Shore Summary

Bay Shore is a hamlet and census-designated place located in the Town of Islip in Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is situated on the South Shore of Long Island, adjoining the Great South Bay. As of the 2010 census, the population of Bay Shore was 26,337.

History

The area now known as Bay Shore was originally inhabited by the Secatogue tribe of the Algonquin nation. The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1683, and the hamlet was officially established in 1842. The hamlet was originally known as Penataquit, and was later renamed to Mechanicsville. In 1868, the name was changed to Bay Shore.
The hamlet was a popular resort destination in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and was home to several large hotels. The area was also a popular spot for fishing and boating.

Geography

Bay Shore is located at 40°44'25" North, 73°14'45" West (40.740278, -73.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.2 square miles, of which 7.9 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles is water.
The hamlet is located on the South Shore of Long Island, adjoining the Great South Bay. It is bordered by the hamlets of Brightwaters to the west, Islip to the north, and West Islip to the east.

Economy

The economy of Bay Shore is largely based on tourism and retail. The hamlet is home to several large shopping centers, including the Westfield South Shore Mall, which is the largest shopping mall on Long Island.
The hamlet is also home to several large employers, including Southside Hospital, the largest employer in the area. Other major employers include the Long Island Rail Road, the Islip Town government, and the Bay Shore Union Free School District.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 26,337 people, 9,945 households, and 6,717 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,323.3 people per square mile. There were 10,541 housing units at an average density of 1,332.3 per square mile. The racial makeup of the CDP was 73.2% White, 14.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.3% from other races, and 3.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.2% of the population.
There were 9,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.19.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $71,945. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $36,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $27,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
