Attica Summary
Attica is a town located in Wyoming County, New York, United States. The population was 3,890 at the 2010 census. The town is named after the ancient Greek city-state of Attica.
Geography
Attica is located in the northwest corner of Wyoming County, bordered by Genesee County to the north, Livingston County to the east, and the towns of Bennington and Sheldon to the south and west, respectively. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.2sqmi, of which 36.1sqmi is land and 0.1sqmi, or 0.22%, is water.
The Tonawanda Creek forms the northern boundary of the town. The Genesee River flows through the town, passing through the village of Attica.
History
The area that is now Attica was first settled around 1802. The town of Attica was formed in 1812 from part of the town of Bennington.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 3,945 people, 1,541 households, and 1,093 families residing in the town. The population density was 109.2 people per square mile (42.1/km^2). There were 1,717 housing units at an average density of 47.4 per square mile (18.3/km^2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.90% White, 0.36% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.72% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.77% of the population.
There were 1,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.7% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $36,944, and the median income for a family was $43,958. Males had a median income of $31,944 versus $22,917 for females.
