Athens is a town located in Greene County, New York, United States. The population was 1,731 at the 2010 census. The town is in the northwest part of the county and is north of the city of Catskill.

History

Athens was first settled around 1790 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The town was formed in 1815 from the town of Catskill. The town was named after the ancient Greek city of Athens.

Geography

Athens is located in the northwest corner of Greene County, bordered by the Hudson River to the west, the town of Catskill to the south, the town of Coxsackie to the east, and the town of New Baltimore to the north. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 24.2 square miles, of which, 23.9 square miles of it is land and 0.3 square miles of it (1.17%) is water.

Athens is a rural town with a small economy. The town is home to several small businesses, including a few restaurants, a grocery store, and a few small shops. The town is also home to a few farms, which produce a variety of crops, including apples, corn, and hay.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,731 people, 690 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 72.3 people per square mile (27.9/km^2). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 31.1 per square mile (12.0/km^2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.45% White, 0.58% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.17% from other races, and 1.46% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.46% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.5% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
