Akron Summary

Akron is a village located in the town of Newstead in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 3,743 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Akron was first settled in 1805 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The village was incorporated in 1853. The name Akron was chosen in honor of Akron, Ohio, the hometown of the first postmaster.

Geography

Akron is located at 42°58′N 78°37′W (42.967, -78.619). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Akron is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a variety of restaurants. The village also has a number of small industrial parks.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,743 people, 1,521 households, and 990 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,717.2 people per square mile (662.2/km2). There were 1,619 housing units at an average density of 735.2 per square mile (284.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.90% White, 0.54% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.86% of the population.
There were 1,521 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older.
