History
Worth was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The town was named after a local landowner, William Worth. The town was originally a farming community, and the majority of the population was employed in agriculture.
In the late 19th century, Worth became a popular tourist destination, due to its proximity to St. Louis. The town was home to several resorts, including the Worth Hotel, which was built in 1891. The hotel was destroyed by a fire in the early 20th century, but the town continued to attract tourists.
