History

Winona was founded in 1883, and was named after the daughter of the first postmaster, Winona Smith. The town was originally a farming community, and the main crops grown were corn, soybeans, and hay. In the early 1900s, the town began to grow, and several businesses were established, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. In the 1950s, the town began to decline, as many of the businesses closed and the population began to decline. In the late 1970s, the town began to experience a resurgence, as tourism began to increase and new businesses began to open. Today, Winona is a small, rural town, with a population of just over 1,000.
