Westphalia Summary

Westphalia is a small town located in Osage County, Missouri, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Osage River, approximately 25 miles west of Jefferson City, the state capital. The town was founded in 1837 and named after the German region of Westphalia. As of the 2010 census, the population of Westphalia was 545.

Geography

Westphalia is located at 38°25'25" North, 92°14'45" West (38.423, -92.246). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

History

Westphalia was founded in 1837 by German immigrants who had settled in the area. The town was named after the German region of Westphalia. The town was incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Westphalia was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.
In the early 20th century, Westphalia experienced a period of growth and prosperity. The town was home to several churches, a bank, a hotel, a movie theater, and a variety of other businesses.

Economy

Westphalia’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, wheat, and hay. The town is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in Westphalia. The population density was 890.7 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 376.7 per square mile (145.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older.
