Trenton is a city located in Grundy County, Missouri, United States. The population was 8,822 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Grundy County. Trenton is located in the northern part of the state, approximately 50 miles northeast of Kansas City.

History

Trenton was founded in 1841 by William B. Trent, a settler from Kentucky. The city was named after him. Trenton was incorporated in 1857.
Trenton was a major stop on the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad, which was the first railroad to cross Missouri. The railroad was completed in 1859 and connected Hannibal, Missouri to St. Joseph, Missouri. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of Trenton and the surrounding area.
Trenton was also a major stop on the Pony Express, which operated from 1860 to 1861. The Pony Express was a mail service that delivered mail from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California.

Geography

Trenton is located at 40°7′25″N 93°37′17″W (40.123611, -93.621389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.45 square miles (14.11 km2), all land.

Economy

Trenton is the economic center of Grundy County. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including a plant that produces automotive parts. The city also has a large agricultural sector, with corn, soybeans, and wheat being the main crops.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,822 people, 3,541 households, and 2,310 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,619.2 people per square mile (624.2/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 719.2 per square mile (277.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.5% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.7 males.
