Tipton Summary

Tipton is a city located in Moniteau County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,945 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Moniteau County.

History

Tipton was founded in 1837 by William Tipton, a settler from Kentucky. The town was originally called Tiptonville, but the name was changed to Tipton in 1845. The town was incorporated in 1867.
Tipton was a major stop on the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad, which ran from Hannibal, Missouri to St. Joseph, Missouri. The railroad was completed in 1859 and was the first transcontinental railroad in the United States.
