Sumner Summary
Sumner, Missouri is a small town located in the northwest corner of the state, near the Iowa border. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area and is located in Lincoln County. The town was founded in 1837 and was named after Charles Sumner, a prominent politician and abolitionist. The population of Sumner was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Sumner is located at 38°45'25" North, 90°51'45" West (38.756944, -90.862500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Sumner’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a hog farm, and a poultry farm. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.4 people per square mile (595.3/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 667.1 per square mile (257.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
