Rocheport Summary

Rocheport is a small town located in Boone County, Missouri, United States. It is situated on the Missouri River, approximately 15 miles west of Columbia. The population was estimated to be around 200 in 2020.

History

Rocheport was founded in 1819 by William and Mary Ann Roche. The town was named after the Roche family, who were among the first settlers in the area. The town was originally a trading post and ferry crossing on the Missouri River. In 1821, the first post office was established in Rocheport.
In 1825, the first bridge across the Missouri River was built in Rocheport. This bridge was destroyed by a flood in 1844, but was rebuilt in 1845. The bridge was destroyed again in 1851, but was rebuilt in 1852. The bridge was destroyed yet again in 1856, but was rebuilt in 1857. This bridge was destroyed by a tornado in 1859, but was rebuilt in 1860.
The town of Rocheport was incorporated in 1867. In the late 1800s, the town was a popular stop for steamboats traveling up and down the Missouri River. The town also had a thriving business district, with several stores, a hotel, and a bank.
