Puxico Summary

Puxico is a small town located in Stoddard County, Missouri, United States. It is situated in the southeastern corner of the state, about 20 miles from the Arkansas border. The population was 1,072 at the 2010 census.

History

Puxico was founded in 1883 by the Stoddard County Railroad Company. The town was named after the Puxico Creek, which runs through the area. The creek was named after a Native American chief who lived in the area.
The town was originally a farming community, but it soon became a center for timber production. The timber industry was the main source of income for the town until the 1950s, when the timber industry began to decline.
In the late 1950s, the town began to diversify its economy. The town now has a variety of businesses, including a lumber mill, a grain elevator, a feed mill, a sawmill, and a furniture factory.

Geography

Puxico is located at 37°14'25" North, 89°59'45" West (37.240278, -89.995833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy
