Morehouse Summary

History

The small town of Morehouse, Missouri is located in the southeastern corner of the state, in New Madrid County. It was founded in 1872 by the Morehouse family, who had moved to the area from Kentucky. The town was named after the family, and the first post office was established in 1873.
The town grew slowly, but steadily, over the years. In the early 1900s, the town was home to a variety of businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, and a livery stable. The town also had a school, which was established in 1876.
In the 1920s, the town began to experience a period of growth. The population increased from around 500 in 1920 to over 1,000 by 1930. This growth was due in part to the construction of a new railroad line, which connected Morehouse to the larger cities of St. Louis and Memphis.
The town continued to grow throughout the 20th century, and by 2000, the population had reached 1,845.

Geography

Morehouse is located in the southeastern corner of Missouri, in New Madrid County. It is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, about 25 miles south of Sikeston. The town is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland, and is located near the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers.
The climate in Morehouse is humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is around 64°F, and the average annual precipitation is around 40 inches.
