Memphis Summary

Memphis, Missouri is a small town located in Scotland County in the northeastern corner of the state. It is situated on the banks of the South Fabius River, and is the county seat of Scotland County. The town was founded in 1845 and was named after the ancient city of Memphis, Egypt. The population of Memphis was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Memphis is located at 40°25'25" North, 92°14'45" West (40.423, -92.246). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
The town is located in the rolling hills of northeast Missouri, and is surrounded by farmland. The South Fabius River runs through the town, and is a popular spot for fishing and canoeing.

Economy

The economy of Memphis is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several large farms, and the surrounding area is known for its production of corn, soybeans, and wheat. The town also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small businesses producing a variety of products.
The town is also home to a number of small retail stores, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The town also has a small medical center, and a number of churches.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,527.3 people per square mile (589.3/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 699.2 per square mile (269.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
