Lewistown Summary

History

The area that is now Lewistown was first settled in 1819 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The town was originally known as “Lewiston” and was named after the first settler, Lewis Smith. The town was officially incorporated in 1837 and was renamed Lewistown in 1845.

In the late 19th century, Lewistown was a thriving river port town. It was a major stop on the Mississippi River for steamboats and barges. The town was also home to several factories, including a flour mill, a sawmill, and a brickyard.

In the early 20th century, Lewistown began to decline as the river traffic decreased and the factories closed. The town was hit hard by the Great Depression and many of the residents left in search of work.

Geography

Lewistown is located in the northwest corner of Lewis County, Missouri. It is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, approximately 40 miles north of St. Louis. The town is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The climate is humid and subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters.
