Higginsville is a city located in Lafayette County, Missouri, United States. The population was 4,719 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lafayette County.

History

Higginsville was founded in 1837 by William Higgins, a settler from Kentucky. The town was originally known as Higginsville, but was later changed to Lafayette City. The name was changed back to Higginsville in 1845.
The town was incorporated in 1867 and was named after William Higgins. The town was a major stop on the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad, which connected St. Louis to Kansas City. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the town.

Geography

Higginsville is located at 39°25'25" North, 93°59'45" West (39.423, -93.996). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
